Ingredients:

4 cups navy beans
6 cups water
1 teaspoon Big Y baking soda
2 teaspoons Big Y vegetable oil
1 medium onion, skin removed
1 ham bone with meat attached
1/2 cup Big Y brown sugar
1/3 cup molasses
2 teaspoons dry mustard
2 teaspoons Big Y salt
1 teaspoon Big Y pepper
5 cups hot water

Instructions:

In a large pot, soak beans in 6 cups of water overnight.

add baking soda to beans with water and over medium-high heat, parboil for 10 minutes. rinse beans with cold water and drain. oil sides and bottom of a crockpot. place whole onion in bottom of crockpot; add beans and ham bone. in a large bowl, mix remaining ingredients with hot water. pour slowly into crockpot until water just about covers the beans. if more liquid is needed, add more water. cover and cook on high for 4 hours; remove ham bone. carefully cut ham away from bone and dice; return diced ham to crockpot. (ham should measure about 3/4 to 1 cup of meat.) cover and cook on low for 3 to 4 more hours. avoid excessive stirring during cooking or beans will get very sticky. discard whole onion before serving.
